Purchasing Harmless Childrens Hoodies And Clothing
There is a ban in the US on any pieces of children’s upper clothing that contains a drawstring. It does not matter if it is on the hood, around the neck or attached to the waist. The ban was prompted by a number of deaths over the past few years. Strangulation occurs when the string gets tangled around the child or caught up on something. Childrens hoodies should be bought when they do not have drawstrings attached. They can be great items of clothing for children.
Back To The Ban
There have been some major cases where big companies who manufacture or sell children’s clothes have been fined. The Consumer Product Safety Commission made tops with drawstrings illegal as they pose a serious risk to the safety of the child wearer.
A three year old boy tragically lost his life when a drawstring he was wearing got caught in a slide as he was going down it, strangling him, which makes the dangers of drawstrings more apparent. Theban has not always been so public and so the retailers stocking illegal clothes were not caught quickly. Now that more people know it is easy for the CPSC to find lawbreaking retailers and prosecute them.
Nordstrom a department store in Seattle have been fined $60,000 for selling illegal tops. Four other retailers received fines totalling over $600,000 over the past few years for the same crime. They include Hills Sportswear and Kohl’s. A girl also died when using playground equipment as a drawstring in a Hills sweatshirt got caught and she suffocated.
Buying safe clothing for your child is a responsibility of every parent. Thinking about the day to day activities of your child and how their clothing could pose a risk is important. Bike pedals can be a place that loose trousers can get caught causing accidents for example.
There is no need to ban all hoodies. When they are designed safely they can look super cute. Children love to wear them because they are comfortable which is a bonus. During the colder autumn and winter months no child should be without one.
